THE PROJECT EXPLORES THE BALANCE BETWEEN LIGHT AND MATTER USING RECYCLED NEWSPAPER. THIS EPHEMERAL MATERIAL IS TRANSFORMED INTO DURABLE STRUCTURES THAT REVEAL LAYERS OF PRINTED STORIES. BEYOND THEIR FUNCTION, THESE LAMPS USE LIGHT TO ACTIVATE THE OBJECT’S MEMORY, CREATING A DIALOGUE BETWEEN MODERN TECHNOLOGY AND RECYCLED MEDIA.

balancing the natural and the artificial

To realize this proposal, the project utilizes newspaper wood, a material developed from recycled newsprint salvaged from two major newspapers in Monterrey, N.L. Its selection reflects the intent to represent the balance between the ephemeral and the permanent: a material conceived for an immediate lifespan is transformed into a solid, stable, and durable element.
Beyond its aesthetic value in simulating wood grain, this material establishes a balance between the natural and the artificial, the familiar and the unexpected. Simultaneously, it preserves visible fragments of printed information, providing a unique narrative layer. Each piece contains traces of past stories, reinforcing the relationship between matter, time, and memory.
From an environmental perspective, the use of newspaper wood also poses a balance between consumption and regeneration, offering an alternative to traditional timber and reducing paper waste. Thus, the project explores more than just a formal proposal; it articulates a reflection on sustainability, transformation, and the value of materials in contemporary design.
